Cruising With Kids – P&O Pacific Dawn

Well I don’t think it will come as a surprise to anyone who has been following us for a while that we love to travel as a family and cruising is always on the top of our list!

dawn1

We have just returned from a seven-day South Pacific cruising experience on P&O’s Pacific Dawn.

Are you looking for cheap flights?

dawn2

In my books a good holiday is restful with no cooking, cleaning or moving from one destination to another and the need to unpack and repack at every hotel. Plus No travelling time to get to the destination as really the ship is the destination. We only had to drive 20min to the departure port and we wasted no time as there were no long flights or time spent chasing a toddler around an airport and within an hour of boarding the P&O Pacific Dawn we’d unpacked (for the one and only time on our holiday) and were on the top deck ready for the sail away party with cocktail in hand. This convenience is one of the many things I love about cruising, along with the fact there are activities to cater for all ages and tastes. It’s the most convenient way for families and anyone looking for an affordable vacation to travel.

dawn4

Holidays are important to us, as a busy family we love to take the time out and reconnect as a family, which we did over each meal but with age-appropriate kids clubs available on our cruise run by qualified teachers or nurses we had peace of mind to know the kids were being well looked after while we took some time to just be a couple and enjoyed the ships many activities on board. There are countless options to keep you busy all day and night or you can skip it all and take in a day of rest on deck or in the day spa (which I did on a couple of occasions)

dawn5

On Pacific Dawn the Lido is where all the action takes place — from lounging about, playing with the kids in the pool, to viewing a movie on the outdoor cinema screen, to eating lunch in the al fresco dining areas its the place to be!

dawn3

If you have bigger kids the P&O Edge Adventure Park is not to be missed and not for the faint hearted it’s installed above the Lido deck, offering 19 activities (at an extra cost) including two flying foxes for zip-lining, the funnel climb, and a dedicated area for riding Segways. Other options include Walk the Plank, which extends off the side of the ship, the high-in-the-sky Crow’s Nest for panoramic views, and a boulder wall for sideways rock climbing this was perfect for the Josh (9yrs) and hubby it was like nothing we had ever seen before and we enjoyed every minute of it.

dawn6

dawn7

Each night we ate as a  family in the Waterfront restaurant and each and every night the staff did more than just serve us, they made us feel like royalty by entertaining us all. Nothing was too much trouble for them they made us, rabbits and mice from napkins, performed magic tricks for the kids, Josh even cried on the last night as he was so sad to leave our waiters as they had become friends he looked forward to seeing every day.

dawn8

dawn9

Our island stops included Noumea, Lifou and Port Vila

In Noumea we left the ship and decided to set out on foot and explore the city we enjoyed a trip to the local supermaché and found delicacies like French wine, baguettes and cheeses surprisingly cheap and enjoyed taking in the city vibe.

dawn10

At Lifou we spent a day looking for Nemo snorkelling on the most stunning reef abuzz with dazzling corals and mesmerising marine life. Lifou is so pretty graced with long, chalky, casuarina-fringed beaches, pebbly inlets, sapphire bays enclosed by sheer limestone cliffs and psychedelic underwater scenes — it’s a water-lover’s wonderland.

dawn11

Port Vila  was a great curtulral experience where we checked out the local markets and mingled with the locals. A visit to Markets in Port Villa made for hassle-free souvenir shopping and food tasting.

dawn12

There is plenty of family activities to participate in, on and off board with a P&O cruise. They offer a range of fun, family activities and adventures so you can share your holiday experience with your little ones.

dawn13

If your interested in cruising be sure to jump onto P&O Cruises has a range of cruises, sailing from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Fremantle.

dawn14

If you have any questions on cruising just drop us a line and we will be happy to answer any questions you have about our cruise.

Hotel Jen Brisbane – Review

When it comes to keeping the little ones happy so you can relax, this centrally located hotel (between the Brisbane CBD and Brisbane Airport) has it all covered.

hotel jen2

Park the car, check into Hotel Jen and explore Brisbane City for a day or two (or more!).

Hotel Jen caters incredibly well to families, offering wonderful service, outstanding facilities, and a selection of room types with city views.

jen1

There is so much to do within walking distance of the hotel with kids, particularly along the Brisbane River. It’s within walking distance of all of Brisbane’s best attractions for kids, including the Queensland Museum and Art Gallery, South Bank, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Botanic Gardens and Queen Street Mall.

hotel jen1

Hotel Jen extremely convenient location  is within Brisbane city and walking distance to the mall, the location is perfect….next door literally is Roma St Station (only 50m from Roma St station) which will take you anywhere in Queensland and so super easy for door-to-door transfers from the airport to the hotel on the rail train, plus its just a short walk to the shops and city ferries and then an easy walk into the CBD to experience all the local cafes and restaurants.

jen2

Its a perfect base from which to relax and explore Brisbane it also makes for the perfect spot for a weekend getaway with friends and family to beat those winter blues.

A few of Brisbane’s best kid-friendly venues are located in the Cultural Centre precinct—the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, the Queensland Museum, The Sciencentre (great for toddlers too!), The State Library of Queensland, and The Queensland Art Gallery and GOMA. Each of these venues feature events aimed at kids of varying ages almost all year round many with free entry.

Our Personal Experience –

Throughout our entire stay at Hotel Jen we were repeatedly impressed by the friendliness of each and every staff member we encountered. The genuine attentiveness from staff, from the front desk who struck up a conversation with our kids as we checked in, to the hotel staff we passed by in the hallways who always smiled and said hello, made us feel welcome, relaxed and made us feel that we could ask for assistance at any time without a hassle. As a mum, this really was a big plus for me, as I often feel like the kids get to enjoy themselves on holidays, but I often don’t unwind quite enough. At Hotel Jen, I really felt like the kids were welcome and therefore nobody would complain about them doing the things that kids do, like making a bit of noise or rushing to press the lift buttons before anyone else.

If you’re heading to Brisbane I can strongly recommend this as a great base for all your city activities, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back!

Disney On Ice – Dare To Dream Magical Ice Festival

disney 1

Disney On Ice is a world class touring performance that needs no introduction, featuring internationally renowned ice skaters, it was a night of enchantment with many magical moments from across the Disney kingdom in the  Disney On Ice Magical Ice Festival where we the audience were  transported to a icy winter wonderland and whisked away into four Disney fairy tales to experience the adventure and magic.

Kids were happy to see their beautiful Disney princesses and sing along to all the familiar tunes, while the adults were mesmerised by beautiful scenes and stunning ice skating performance, its just a truly magical experience for the whole family.

disney on ice 2

Nothing can stop kids from screaming and jumping up and down in glee when this gang of friends come onto the rink. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy kicked start the show with lots of cheering and excitement and they play the hosts for the show and appears a couple of times throughout the 2-hour performance.

disney on ice 2

The one performance EVERYONE was waiting for Frozen, all the little girls around me sang at the top of the voice to all the tunes from Frozen, screamed and waved at Anna and Elsa when they appeared and clapped non-stop when it ended. Miss Piper knows all the words to Frozen and didn’t hesitate to belt them out in full theatrical form. (Not all the right words in the right places but hey close enough is good enough right!)  OMG, cutest thing EVER! I don’t know what I enjoyed more, seeing all the little Annas and Elsas in the audience singing along or seeing the performers, either way, this act was awesome.

disney on ice 4

We absolutely LOVE all things Disney and this was no exception we would totally go back and see it again and again night after night if we could.

Out of the Box Festival 2016 – Review

qpac1

With much anticipation and excitement we headed to the OUT OF THE BOX festival at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) in Brisbane. This was the first time we would be attending the festival, which has been held  since 1992, it is 8 days of performances, workshops free activities and ticketed events that are designed to enhance learning and discovery.

qpac2

First on our agenda was Touch & Go – a dancing game of cause and effect, carefully created for this curious and hands-on age group. Touch & Go is dedicated to the mighty two year old, inviting them to enter a special world with two friendly dancers, shapes, pathways and live music. Interspersed with playful enticements to become part of the performance, children are free to take part or observe, venture out or stay close, Miss P being the dancing queen loved every minute of the experience and got in the swing of things from the very start.

qpac3

After a quick lunch it was then off to Tai Chi – which was a big hit with Piper. Through play, children exercise their motor coordination and learn about interaction with others. Tai Chi makes great use of the children’s imagination and the workshop takes cues from classic stories from Chinese folklore and cultural history.

Back again the next day we made our way to the cultural forecourt for some baby yoga – An interactive parent-baby workshop experience, we learnt some unique yoga sequences designed to improve baby’s development, using movement and songs to enhance learning. Piper loved this and it was fantastic to see how quickly she picked it up and it was all we heard about on the way home.

qpac4

We finished the day checking out all the free activities that were available and by afternoon I was taking home lots of craft and one very happy toddler who slept well all the way home.

qpac5

As I said, this was our first OUT OF THE BOX festival but now that we’ve attended and participated in this one, we’ll certainly be looking forward to and planning for next year. Just so much to do and see make sure you visit you wont be disappointed.

A very big Thank You to the organizers at QPAC for a couple of fab days out.

Love Kerry and Miss Piper xoxo

QPAC’S Out Of The Box Festival For Children Eight Years And Under

ootb2

With much anticipation and excitement Piper and I are awaiting June as we are headed to the OUT OF THE BOX festival  for children 8 years and under at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) in Brisbane. This longstanding biennial event is a highlight on Brisbane’s cultural calendar for both schools and families alike.

This was the first time we will be attending the festival, which has been held since 1992.

We are ready and waiting to see and be involved in the CREATIVE CREATURES, KIDS’ THINK TANK, RAIN, SNOW AND A GAZILLION BUBBLES!

We will also be participating in the Wellness Workshops which are designed to connect the mind and body through the principles of movement, stillness and mindfulness, and educate about the origins of these art forms seen so strongly in many Asian cultures and spirituality. The workshops include children’s yoga, mum-and-baby yoga, tai chi, Kung-Fu, and meditation. These art forms have been around for centuries, and have proven long-term health benefits and we cant wait to get involved!

This event is Perfect for the little ones helping them explor and learn through numerous creatively designed activities and plays to enhance learning and discovery.

Taking place 21 – 28 June 2016 at QPAC and across the Cultural Precinct and South Bank, Brisbane, Out of the Box provides a rich arts-based program for both schools and the general public. This year’s Festival crosses over the end of theschool term and into the June school holidays.

Out of the Box has been curated by QPAC for 24 years and is the only arts festival in Australia dedicated to children 8 and under and one of only a few in the world. It’s also the nation’s largest early childhood arts festival and had more than 103,000 participants in the 2014 festival.

We hope to see you there!

Carnival Cruise Lines for family Holidays

My family and I spent 9 days cruising onboard the Carnival Spirit  – a ship very much designed with families in mind.
I’ve travelled on Carnival Cruise Lines before now. But this is something else again.
The ship boasts amazing facilities, extensive kids clubs and has the Dr Suess  characters onboard.

cruise13

But is it just a floating entertainment palace?

Many people are concerned about all that noise and all those kids and the crowds?

These are all questions we asked ourselves, so I know other families will be asking them too.

We’re not really into big crowds. We kind of like our own space. Don’t get me wrong, we like to go to shows and attractions etc. But we also like to retreat to our own little corner too. Can you even do that on a cruise ship of this size?

My family are hard to please on holidays. They want to be doing, doing, doing all the time. They want to see things and experience things and at 18, 9 and 2 they all need different experiences.
So that is a difficult holiday to find!

cruise9

But find it we did.

As a mother I know exactly what it’s like when you’re looking to spend your money on something for the whole family. And let’s face it,  holidays are expensive. Especially if you have school-aged children and have to take your holidays during the most expensive times so value for money is what we all want.

We travelled on the Spirit for 9 nights to New Caledonia in Febuary and barely touched the sides of what is on offer to do.
And we did a LOT of stuff.
Trust me when I tell you, there is no way you will ever be bored on this ship.

cruise10

Here’s a quick overview why:

cruise1

Food and Dining

You will find plenty of choices with delicious dining options for the whole family, most of which is included in the price of your cruise. (Some venues charge additional make sure to check before you cruise)

If you’re not sure about any of the restaurants you can just pop in and ask a member of staff to see the menu, if they have any additional charges and what sort of food they serve.  We found them supremely helpful – especially when asking about the suitability for children.
If you don’t want to dress up and like to eat quite informally, be sure to check out the varity on offer at the self service buffet with a HUGE selection for even the fussiest of eaters.
It does however get very busy, but there are staff helping with seating so you’re never waiting for too long.
It’s a great place to eat lunch or breakfast.
If you like formal dining, or something a bit special, the dining room is a gorgeous spectacle of a dining room that’s open for  breakfast, lunch and dinner most days.
My kids highlight was seeing the wait staff everynight who danced and sang with them, and treated them like their own children, Mr 8 even cried one the last night as he was so sad to leave them.
There are lots of other places to eat if you want something quick and easy – such as 24 hour pizza, burgers, Mexican, sushi, and a café with amazing coffee, cakes and donuts.

Or, if you’re feeling really decadent, order in room service and sit on your balcony watching the sea slip by!

cruise11

THE POOLS
There are 2 different pools for families on board, plus a H2O Zone for children with squirting water cannons, slides and two huge multi-coloured waterslides looming overhead  and lots of places to play.

Plus an adults-only pool, that looked very tranquil and private and very much feels like a private spa, unfortuanlly we never made it for a swim on our own.

The main pools, are for every day use and consequently it is rather noisy around here!
The pools aren’t huge so during busy times it can feel quite crowded, the perfect time for a quite visit is early morning or during a port days when you find them almost empty.

That said the children absolutely loved the pool.

But please note: Babies/ All Children must be toilet trained to use the ship pools and swim nappies are NOT allowed due to health regulation, luckily I had already heard this and trained Piper two months prior to our trip otherwise it would have been a nightmare going anywhere near the pools and trying to explain she couldn’t go in! So if your thinking of booking and know your child will want to swim then make sure you have already or leave enough time to get that training done before you depart. Also toilets are not located close to the pool area so make sure they have learnt to hold on and take them for regular toilet stops just in case.

cruise6

THE DAY SPA
Yes I just had to try it out! Its quite large in size with a full gym with spa for Adults in the rear. I had the most wonderful facial and massage and felt a million dollars. If it’s something that interests you, make sure you book in quickly when you board as the spots do tend to fill up quite quickly plus book for a treatment early in the cruise as its well worth it to relax early and get the full holiday experience.

cruise4

YOUTH ZONE
Or the kids clubs. Personally I’ve never really cared if my kids go to kids clubs or not and are happy to spend the holiday enjoying time with them, so I leave it up to them but I can honestly say Joshua Mr 8 was begging to return after his first session he loved it. It’s Suitable for children aged 3 and 17, they are SO well thought out, the facilities are amazing, all activities are Age-appropriate like treasure hunts, obstacle courses, arts and craft, sports competitions, movies and playground outings at sea.

Piper was too young to leave alone as stating age is three but we were able to take her in at certain times and let her have a play with the toys and stay and  play with her her which she really enjoyed.

If you want an Adults night out they also provide “Night Owls”club which for a nominal fee, kids aged 2-11 can stay  up with others their age until as late as 1 a.m. They’ll enjoy music, activities, games and giveaways at supervised parties while you enjoy some time out maybe wining and dining.

cruise5

On top of ALL of this there is a casino, a gym, loads of very different bars, a library, nightclub,  – even a chapel if you fancy tying the knot onboard.

cruise3

So did we find that much desired corner to ourselves? Did we find it crowded, overbearing, busy?
Well yes, we travelled on the ship at peak holiday time so it was busy. But there was always  somewhere to find peace.

Would I recommend cruising to a family with little ones.
Yes I would.

cruise18

Just be prepared that you might not get to do and see everything that you want too, as often little ones have other ideas, traveling with family or friends as a group is always a good way to go as you can always swap around the baby sitting duties.

As a family when we travel we want quality, to be treated well – very well – and we want to go home with amazing memories.

And that’s exactly what we got.

Thanks Carnival Cruise Lines for the amazing memories.

Love Kerry and Miss Piper

*This really just touches on our cruise experience so if you have any questions feel free to ask a question here or Pop on over to Instagram and send me a Direct Message.

Also be sure to check out our last Blog post on the green eggs and ham breakfast onboard.
